One of the last places I went while in the Keys was Alligator Reef. While the name says alligator there are no alligators to be found here but there is a lighthouse as you can see in the picture above. It is a man made reef where people go to snorkel and scuba dive. People come here to snorkel and go on shallow dives. Snorkelers feed hotdogs to nurse sharks here. (Nurse sharks are not aggressive.)
When a boat wants to anchor here they are not allowed to anchor due to it being a preserve. Instead the boat must tie a line to a floating buoy that is already in place there. This a way to protect the reef and prevent any damage.
It is shallow with the most beautiful, crystal clear water anyone could ever imagine! While snorkeling the reef I encountered a curious barracuda. It frightened me and I made my way back to the boat to catch my breath; but that didn't stop me from getting back into the water!
